Things To Know When Writing An AbstractAbstracts are often referred to as the springboard or the foundation of a thesis. An abstract is a summary of a research paper that gives a glimpse into the main idea and ideas that the reader should be familiar with before embarking on the detailed study. These summaries can also be used to describe the main points of the study in terms of the methods, hypothesis, conclusion, scope, data, and analysis.
The main purpose of an abstract is to inform the reader of the study being conducted and make them aware of the main idea of the research paper. However, an abstract does not talk about how to conduct the study but rather the central or the general thrust of the research. It is important that an abstract has all the required details that relate to the research in order for it to be useful. There are two types of an abstract: co-referencing and independent abstracts. Co-referencing is where the author gives a summary of the main concept and the focus of the study in a few words and notes that some specific details and issues must be considered. The reader is then guided through the rest of the study. This is quite similar to the summaries that are presented in an essay. However, in this case, the author presents his information as brief as possible to reduce the time and effort of reading the whole work. Independent abstracts are separate from the rest of the study and are written separately. There is no guide as to what must be included in the summary, except that all the topics are important and must be covered. However, because these abstracts do not co-reference with the rest of the study, the focus is often on the main points. In some cases, an abstract is preferred over the main body of the paper. An abstract usually only mentions a few concepts and ideas that may not be as important to a reader as the central theme. The information given is usually specific, so that it is easier for the reader to understand. Some research papers are more narrow in their subject matter, focusing only on a particular field or a particular branch of science. Such papers usually have a lot of details and abstracts that cover a variety of subjects. However, with more abstracts on a single paper, more focus can be given to the main theme or the core of the study. One thing to keep in mind when writing an abstract is that it should not be too long or too detailed. Short and succinct are the best words to describe the topic. There is a certain amount of flexibility in what can be discussed in an abstract. It can discuss topics such as topics that pertain to a specific study, or even in several studies at the same time. However, some abstracts may discuss topics that pertain to several different studies. It is better to be specific in the abstract. This will help the reader be aware of the scope of the study and thus allows them to understand what the findings mean. Lastly, the abstract should be all focused on the general and central theme of the study, which is the study itself.
